We had a GREAT first week!

Well we made it through the first 3 days!  I enjoyed meeting all of you and look forward to getting to know you even better.  We will begin to look at narrative writing and review some grammar basics next week in Language Arts.  In Literature, we will focus on getting ready for Shakespearience on Friday.  Even 6th grade will begin to explore some background information about William Shakespeare.

Here is a picture of 6th graders: Sophia, Michael, Hayden and Faith who were the only middle school team to have their marshmallow tower upright by the end of the challenge! Everyone did a great job on this activity and I hope you learned a little bit about teamwork and collaboration.

Hello from Mrs. Janaskie!

Dear 6th, 7th and 8th Grade Students and Parents,

I am so excited to join the St Mary's Middle School team and to be your Language Arts and Literature teacher.  We are going to have a wonderful year together and I am looking forward to getting to know each of you!

Let me tell you a little bit about myself and my family.  My husband, Paul, and I moved here last August from Bethesda, Maryland with our three kids and black lab, Junie.  We have a son and a daughter in college, and our youngest son attends Northwest Catholic High School.  All of our children attended Catholic parochial schools, from kindergarten to 12th grade.

We have enjoyed getting settled here in Connecticut; it is truly a beautiful state.  I must confess, however, that we are still not used to seeing bears and turkeys in our backyard!!

My professional life began after I received my Master's degree from the University of Rochester.   I worked as a healthcare policy analyst in New York, Chicago and Washington D.C. mostly focusing on the federal Medicare and Medicaid programs. Next, I spent 14 years as a full-time mom (i.e. a part-time chauffeur, school lunch angel, soccer fan, and Girl Scout leader!).  In the summer of 2015 I completed my M.Ed. at the University of Maryland and became a teacher.  During that time, I spent a  year teaching 5th grade in Howard County, Maryland.  I am a life-long learner and want to support a love of learning in others.  I can't wait to get started!!

I hope you are enjoying the last days of summer.  I will see you all soon!

Peace,
Mrs. Janaskie
